WASHINGTON D.C. — (07-26-21) — The U.S. Senate made history on Monday confirming two LGBTQ women to top military positions. Gina Ortiz Jones will serve as undersecretary of the Air Force — the first openly known lesbian to serve as undersecretary of a military branch.

The second is Shawn Skelly who will serve as assistant secretary of defense for readiness, becoming the first ever transgender person to hold the post and the highest-ranking out trans defense official in U.S. history.

Shawn Skelly is also the second trans person confirmed by the Senate, following Rachel Levine, the assistant secretary to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Now here is the best part, the Senate confirmed Gina Ortiz Jones and Shawn Skelly with unanimous consent.

In recognition of her confirmation, Skelly shared a GIF on Twitter of a character from the TV show “Ted Lasso” asking “Me?”

The Biden administration reversed former president Trump’s ban on Transgenders in the U.S. Military with new policies allowing trans people to enlist and serve openly. His new orders took effect in April.
