ROSEAU, DOMN — (04-22-24) — The Dominica High Court decriminalize consensual same-sex acts between adults on Monday, by declaring sections 14 and 16 of the ‘Sexual Offences Act’ unconstitutional. The ruling has been hailed as a landmark victory for the LGBTQ+ community and human rights in the Caribbean nation.

The ruling made by the Dominica High Court was celebrated by local and international organizations. It is being seen as a crucial step towards equality and the safeguarding of human rights in Dominica.

The ruling was also welcomed by UNAIDS for protecting the rights of LGBTQ people in the Caribbean nation. “Today another Caribbean Court has struck down the harmful old colonial punitive law which had criminalised LGBTQ people. Dominica’s ruling is a win for public health as well as for human rights. Protecting the human rights of all people is essential to protect the health of all people.”
