WASHINGTON, D.C. — (11-05-19) — Sen. Kamala Harris rejects the idea that Black Voters some how hate Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transgenders. The rebuke stems from the comments made by Rep. James Clyburn (D) of South Carolina on CNN this past weekend.

“I am never going to buy into that trope,” said Harris. “And I think it’s a trope that has evolved among some Democrats to suggest that African-Americans are homophobic,” Harris told CNN.

The issue sparked outrage from Harris in an interview on The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer. The anchor asked Sen. Harris about Rep. James Clyburn’s comments that gay candidate Pete Buttigieg’s sexuality may hurt him with older black voters in South Carolina.

“I’m not going to sit here and tell you otherwise. I think everybody knows that’s an issue,” said Clyburn on CNN.

While Harris respects Rep. James Clyburn, she strongly disagrees with his perception of Black voters. “It’s wrong to ascribe there is rampant homophobia and transphobia within the black community as a whole,” said Harris.

Harris further added that she thinks its wrong to believe anti-LGBTQ sentiment is any more cemented in racial minority groups.

“The reality is that, sadly and unfortunately in all communities, bias occurs, and in particular homophobia and transphobia,” said Harris. “I’ve spent my entire career fighting against it. So I know it is a fact. But to label one community in particular as being burdened by this bias as compared to others is misinformed, it’s misdirected and it’s just simply wrong. Moreover, it ignores the significant overlap in the communities, said Harris.

In all fairness to Rep. Clyburn, he did emphasize that it is a generational issue just as it is with most racial groups on this planet.
