OTTAWA — (03-11-20) — Canada’s Justice Minister David Lametti introduced a Bill to the House of Commons that would make it illegal to practice conversion therapy on a minor.

“Conversion therapy is a cruel practice that can lead to life-long trauma, particularly for young people,” David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, said during a press conference on Monday. “It sends a demeaning and degrading message.”

“This legislation will save countless LGBTQ young lives,” said The Trevor Project’s Troy Stevenson.

Ottawa’ Liberal party is following in the footsteps of countries that have banned conversion therapy on minors; Austria, British Columbia, France, Norway, Nova Scotia, Prince Island and the Netherlands.

The new legislation introduced by David Lametti would also make it illegal to make a profit off of conversion therapy treatment, even if the practice is performed on an adult client.

“Today, I am happy to share that we have made significant progress in addressing an issue that is close to the hearts of many Canadians, our promise to protect Canadians from conversion therapy,” Lametti said Monday. “We’re telling doctors and professionals that we want to see this act eradicated. I’m not sure I can make that more clear.” said Lametti.

“I’m very happy to see that the government has advanced this bill quickly,” said NDP MP Randall Garrison. “We will work with them to ensure it achieves the goal of being the most comprehensive bill banning conversion therapy in the world,” said Garrison.

So far conservatives have been silent but members of the Liberal party are confident that the legislation will pass.
