An Alabama Senate committee is continuing their attacks on the LGBT community by advancing a bill to allow faith-based adoption agencies which includes those that care for state foster children at tax payer 
dollars, turn away gay couples on religious grounds.
On Wednesday Feb. 22, the Alabama Senate Health Committee voted 6-1 in favor of the legislation that would prohibit the state licensing bureau from refusing to grant licenses or sign contracts with adoption agencies that refuse services to citizens on religious grounds.
The architect on the bill, Sen. Bill Hightower (pictured right) says..”The bill would protect the 30 percent of adoption agencies that are faith-based.” said Hightower. “The bill would keep that adoption channel open for needy foster children.” said Hightower.
Denise Brogan-Kator of the Family Equality Council blasted the decision to move forward the bill in the state’s legislature. She says “It would give groups the state’s permission and taxpayer funding to discriminate against gay couples who want to adopt.” said Brogan-Kator.
The ironic thing the Alabama Senate isn’t the only branch of the state’s government targeting the LGBT community as a similar bill recently passed in their state’s House committee.
