WASHINGTON, D.C. — (03-22-24) — In order to avert a government shutdown, American embassies around the world will not be able to fly PRIDE flags or Black Lives Matter flags this summer, a measure agreed to by the White House in order to get the $1.2 trillion spending bill passed through Congress. The final vote waas 286-134. with 114 Republicans and 22 progressive Democrats voting against it.

H.R. 2882 passed on Friday morning by a vote of 286-134, averting the US government from shutting down and funding it through September 30, the end of the 2024 fiscal year. A total of 114 Republicans and 22 progressive Democrats voting against the bill.

While the PRIDE and Black Lives Matter flags are prohibited from being display on American Embassies worldwide this summer, Republicans are still crying foul as H.R. 2882 continues to fund progressive programs.

House Speaker Mike Johnson – a Louisiana Republican – has presented the flag amendment as a major victory. Meanwhile, the Democrats have used it to accuse the GOP of being mean and “homophobic.”

“Anti-LGBTQ Republicans love nothing more than to demagogue LGBTQ Americans,” Congressman Ritchie Torres of New York said on Friday. “I support funding the federal government. So we’re held hostage by the extremism of the Republican Party.” said Torres.

Since 2021, the U.S. State Department has promoted both the Pride flag and Black Lives Matter Flags at embassies abroad and at its Washington D.C. government buildings.

In fact to show how the Biden administration is determined to support LGBTQ Community, in May of 2021, the US embassy to the Vatican hung a massive PRIDE flag on the outside of its building to promote on social media and to say that “LGBTQI+ rights are human rights.”
