KAMPALA, UGANDA — (01-07-24) — Internationally known gay rights activist Steven Kabuye, was stabbed by unknown assailants last week over him being gay. Kabuye blames the hate crime attack on a growing intolerance of the LGBTQ community fueled by politicians in Uganda.

The anti-LGBT intolerance narrative being exacerbated is outrageous. So much so that Steven Kabuye said from his hospital bed in Kampala…“politicians who are using the LGBTQ+ community as a scapegoat to move people away from what is really happening in the country”.

According to police, two attackers on a motorcycle attempted to stab Kabuye in the neck last Wednesday. When he tried to shield himself, the two men then stabbed him in the right arm and stomach. Video of the hate crime attack was posted on X, where you can see Kabuye on the ground in pain with a knife stuck in his stomach and a knife wound on his right arm.

Kabuye said last Thursday that he believes that the attackers weren’t trying to wound him but to murder him, and that he fears that these people might be bold enough to attack him in the hospital. “I don’t know who to trust right know,” said Kabuye.
