WASHINGTON, D.C. — (12-08-22) — By a vote of 258-169, the Respect for Marriage Act passes the House of Representatives with 39 Republicans joining democrats to pass the first ever same-sex marriage protection on a federal level.

The House of Representatives passed the Respect for Marriage Act on Thursday to codify protections for same-sex marriages and interracial marriages.  In total, 169 Republicans voted against it.

The bill, which is already on its way to President Joe Biden’s desk to sign into law. The new law will also repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as being between a man and a woman.
