LAS VEGAS — (06-19-22) — Anti-LGBTQ hate crimes are surging in the USA by right wing extremist groups due in no small part to right wing media outlets spewing lies about LGBTQ people daily.
In Idaho, police arrested 31 members of a white supremacist group packed into the back of a U-Haul truck who were apparently on their way to attack an LGBTQ+ pride event in the town of Coeur d’Alene.
Lincoln, Nebraska’s City Council Rescinds LGBTQ Anti-Discrimination Law 4 Months After Passage
Then we have a crew of Proud Boys who interrupted a drag queen show at a PRIDE event in California by intimidating parents and children while screaming transphobic and homophobic insults.
In Texas, a group of right wing conservatives screamed abuse and threatened attendees at an adults-only drag brunch. All of the incidents mentioned above led to multiple arrests and all took place over one weekend.
With the amount of right wing media outlets promoting anti-LGBTQ+ hate in America, this wasn’t a surprise. LGBTQ advocates have been warning of an alarming rise in anti-trans and gay speech over the past 5 years.
It’s an increase that has been spurred by Republican politicians in both Federal and State legislatures and rightwing media outlets, who have pushed anti-LGBTQ+ talking points and legislation that has seen the rights and safety of LGBTQ Americans vanish.
“While there is always a fringe, extremist element that opposes LGBTQ equality, there has been an enormous increase in misinformation and lies about LGBTQ people entering mainstream discourse,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD, one of America’s largest LGBTQ+ rights organizations. “When you have networks like Fox News and anti-LGBTQ outlets like Daily Wire, Brietbart, and Daily Caller broadcasting horrific lies about LGBTQ people to millions of people, an increase in threats and violence is the natural result.
Sara Kate Ellis further added…“When you have lawmakers like Governor Ron DeSantis, Representative Marjorie Taylor-Greene, and Governor Greg Abbott not only spreading misinformation, but targeting LGBTQ families with unbased and harmful legislation and policies, it empowers anti-LGBTQ extremists.” said Ellis.
