Trump Revokes Public School Protections for Transgenders

President Donald Trump’s administration late Wednesday Feb. 22, revoked the landmark guidance issued to public schools in defense of transgender student rights, reversing course on a signature initiative of former Democratic President Barack Obama who led the fight for the LGBTQ community to same-sex marriage becoming the law of the land. In fact the new Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, who has had a hard time settling into her new position, opposed both President Trump and U.S Attorney General Jeff Session on this issue.

Former President Obama issued his guidelines to public schools through the Department of Education in May 2016, to allow transgender students to be able to utilize the bathrooms matching their chosen gender identity.

The order further stated that Federal funds could be withheld if they should force transgender children to use bathrooms against their will.

The Obama guidelines had already been blocked by Judge Reed O’Connor of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, however the Trump administration went ahead any way and withdrew the guidelines. According to the White House, the Justice and Education departments will continue to study the legal issues involved in their decision, superseding guidance that will be sent to public schools across the country.

It is being reported that thousands are converging on the white house to protest the Republican president’s reversal chanting: “No hate, no fear, trans students are welcome here.”
