RIDGECREST, CA — (07-04-19) — A 6.4-magnitude earthquake violently shook Southern California on Thursday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden said.
The 6.4 magnitude earthquake was felt as far as Las Vegas. In fact here at the JRL CHARTS offices, the magnitude of that 6.4 earthquake was felt and in Hollywood, California, the CNN building security camera showed billboards and street lights shaking as well as buildings.
It’s the largest earthquake in Southern California since the 1994 6.6 Northridge quake, which killed several people and caused billions of dollars in damage.
The Ridgecrest area has a population of 20,000 people who awoke to a 4.2 earthquake in the early morning hours. That was followed by the 6.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the area at 10:33 a.m..
The quake was centered about 11 miles east of Ridgecrest, about 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles in the Mojave Desert.
6.4-Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Southern California
Reports are coming in that a hotel and retail shops suffered damage from the 6.4 magnitude earthquake. So far the area has experienced 4 aftershocks with one measuring 4.7-magnitude. So far no fatalities have been reported.
