CAPE TOWN, SA — (12-26-23) — In a stunning rebuke of Pope Francis’ order to allow the blessing of same-sex couples, Catholic bishops in Africa and Poland are saying they reject the vatican’s order and will not implement the policy allowing blessings for same-sex couples in their churches.
The reactions show how divided the church continues to be in regards to same-sex couples. While Pope Francis has had a decade-long track record of trying to bring the church into the 21st century in regards to recognizing LGBTQ+ community, he still faces major resistance from the traditionalist and conservative Catholic leaders worldwide.
In fact, bishops in Africa, home to 265 million Catholics, or as they would say, nearly a quarter of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics, operate in countries that consider homosexuality a crime. We are sure to see more traditionalist and conservative Catholic bishops attempting to claim their 5 minutes of fame in the media with their resistance to the Pope’s order of blessing same-sex couples.
