NEW ORLEANS, LA — In what has truly become a worldwide story that has captured the LGBTQ community, New Orleans will never be the same after it was reported that a lawsuit in which a 19 year-old transgender inmate imprisoned at the New Orleans Parish Prison last year, claims that she was raped after being locked in a cell with a male prisoner in late 2015.
The lawsuit against prison officials, was filed in Federal court in September.
According to the lawsuit filed by attorneys representing the victim states that the former inmate, who was born male, has been living as a female.
When the victim was convicted for crimes unrelated to the the lawsuit, the victim was transferred to the Orleans Parish Prison where she was forced to share a cell with a convicted armed robbery suspect who raped her.
Our newsroom attempted to get comment from officials at Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office who runs the jail for comment prior to posting of this article but was told that they could not comment on pending litigation. On Wednesday October 26, a federal judge set June 19, 2017 as a trial date for this case.
