WASHINGTON, D.C. — (08-07-19) — Lesbian Judge Mary Rowland, who was nominated by Donald Trump, was confirmed along with two other judges by the U.S. Senate by a vote of 87-1 last week.

After two and a half years of relentless attacks on LGBTQ rights, advocates such as Lambda Legal, celebrated this rare victory with a Republican Senate in the Trump era.

Judge Mary Rowland of Illinois was confirmed by the Senate last week to serve on the U.S. District Court of Northern Illinois. Even though Trump nominated her over a year ago, her confirmation had been held up up in red tape for months, but finally she was confirmed by a majority vote which included support from anti-LGBTQ Republican Senators.

Lesbian Judge Nominated by Trump Wins Senate Confirmation

Rowland who is married and mother of two, has placed her lesbian identity front and center with her work for LGBTQ cases on a pro bono basis for Lambda Legal.

“Sadly, this administration has no commitment to diversifying his appointments or the federal bench, but we are proud of Judge Rowland and know she brings an important perspective to a judiciary that often lacks that perspective,” said Elliot Imse of the Victory Fund, who works to elect LGBTQ people to political office.

Rowland’s confirmation was shepherded by Illinois’s Democratic senators, Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, who hailed the bipartisan confirmation.
