CHICAGO — (02-20-19) — On Wednesday, Jussie Smollett was charged with disorderly conduct for filing a false report about an attack that he claimed was a hate crime.
The charge, announced by the Cook County state’s attorney’s office, comes just hours after the Chicago Police Department announced Smollett was a suspect in the case. We have confirmed that this is a felony charge.
CNN Reported…: We have just confirmed ourselves that Jussie Smollett has been charged here in Cook County with felony disorderly conduct. Now, earlier this afternoon, two brothers, two men who were arrested last week as suspects in this attack came here to the grand jury. Their lawyer just told us that they decided to man up and tell the truth. That lawyer told us that those two brothers were paid by Jussie Smollett. We have been hearing this from law enforcement sources for a few days now, that Smollett paid these men. He choreographed, orchestrated this attack on himself.”
Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx recused herself last week from the investigation into a reported attack on the FOX TV “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett “, out of an abundance of caution” because she spoke to one of his relatives after it was reported and acted as a go-between with Chicago police.
Jussie Smollett originally claimed that he was walking in early hours of Jan. 29 when two men walked up to him and yelled racial and anti-LGBT slurs. He also claimed that the two brothers shouted, “This is MAGA country” and allegedly wrapped a noose around his neck.
The attack was initially investigated as a hate crime before questions arose about the veracity of Smollett’s claims.
