SOUTH BEND, IN — (03-18-19) — Gay presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg qualifies for presidential debates in Indiana. The young openly gay mayor of South Bend makes history by qualifying for the presidential debates.
According to one of Buttigieg’s aides, the mayor raised over $600,000 from 22,200 donations within 24 hours after his CNN town hall.
Buttigieg says he is delighted to have reached a threshold by being invited to participate in the nationally televised debates.
The mayor now presidential candidate for 2020, tweeted at @PeteButtigieg on Saturday…“Thanks to you, we hit the @TheDemocrats 65,000 donor goal in order to be invited to the first debate. But we are going to need to raise a lot more money to compete. I know I can hold my own on the debate stage and represent your values with honor and integrity, but I need to know we can build a strong organization, too.” tweeted Mayor Buttigieg.
According to the Democratic National Committee, The first debate is scheduled for June. You’ll be able to watch Mayor Pete Buttigieg on NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo. The second debate, slated for July, will be broadcast on CNN.
According to the DNC, the first debate is set up for 20 candidates. The Democratic National committee established a fundraising threshold for 2020 candidates to qualify. Candidates are required to have 65,000 individual donors from at least 20 states and openly gay mayor Pete Buttigieg easily qualified.

Buttigieg also makes history as begin the first time an openly gay presidential candidate will participate at a DNC sanctioned debate.
The mayor got the news this past weekend when he was doing an interview with Chris Wallace on FOX News Sunday.
“The president’s promise is to turn back the clock, that we can somehow just go back to the 1950s,” buttigieg told Chris Wallace. “It’s just not true. The economy is changing, the pace of change is accelerating, and what we’ve got to do is master those changes in order to make them work for us.” said Buttigieg.
