REDWOOD CITY, CA — (10-15-18) — Police in Redwood City are investigating the vandalism that took place at gay city council candidate Jason Galisatus home. The vandalism hate crime took place on National Coming Out Day last week.

Jason Galisatus, an openly gay candidate for Redwood City Council, came home to find his the fence in front of his apartment tagged with a homophobic slur on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Police said the fence was tagged with “#GAY”. Police also said that one of Jason Galisatus’ campaign posters was torn down.

Galisatus told The Daily Journal…“It was unsettling, but I will not be intimidated and it won’t stop me from being outspoken on issues I care about.” said Galisatus. “This campaign is about representing all residents of Redwood City no matter their background. And on the City Council, I intend to be a leader who will stand up for all residents in our community, whether you just moved here or have lived here a long time and no matter what neighborhood or generation you belong to.” said Galisatus.

Redwood City Police Chief Dan Mulholland told JRL CHARTS…”An investigation is underway for this hate crime.” said Mulholland. “The police department takes these allegations very seriously and detectives conducting the investigation are treating the matter as a hate crime,” said Mulholland.

Mayor Ian Bain of Redwood City sent an email to the press pool on this obvious hate crime. “I am surprised and very saddened to hear this. Our community is better than this, and no matter how heated the campaign gets, our candidates deserve better than this. Everyone who is running is a good person, and they should be treated with respect, not subjected to hurtful and personal attacks.” said Mayor Bain.
