WASHINGTON, D.C. — Daytime television talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres, was praised and awarded by President Barack Obama for her influence on the “Gay Rights” with the highest civilian award, the “Medal of Freedom“, on Tuesday Nov. 22.

Joining DeGeneres in being awarded the “Medal of Freedom” were veteran celebrities Diana Ross, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro and Michael Jordan who were among the total of 21 recipients who were awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

President Barack Obama said “It was easy to forget the risk Ellen DeGeneres took to come out as gay in 1997. Her bravery helped “push our country in the direction of justice” said Obama.  “It’s easy to forget now, when we’ve come so far… just how much courage was required for Ellen to come out on the most public of stages almost 20 years ago. What an incredible burden that was to bear – to risk your career like that – people don’t do that very often. And then, to have the hopes of millions on your shoulders.” said Obama.

Congratulations to Ellen DeGeneres and all of the 21 recipients of this year’s Presidential Medal of Freedom award honor.  Catch Ellen daily on ABC TV.
