PICACHO, AZ — (05-11-19) — Appeal was denied in the adult store robbery and murder trial of Adam Chavez last week.  An appellate court ruled defendant Adam Chavez was not entitled to present testimony that questioned the actions of a Pinal County Sheriff’s Office deputy during his 2016 murder trial.

The Arizona Court of Appeals affirmed Adam Chavez’s murder conviction on May 3, after the 28-year-old asked for a new trial, alleging the trial court made several errors that prejudiced the jury’s verdict.

Adam Chavez was found guilty of murdering Matthew Clowers, his partner in a failed robbery of an adult store near Picacho Peak.

After the two robbers fled from the adult store on Dec. 23, 2013, PCSO Deputy Tyler Schiess chased the suspects and rammed his patrol car into their vehicle. The two suspects attempted to run on foot but were both shot by Deputy Schiess, which resulted in the killing of Clowers.

Adult Store Robbery, Murder Convict Adam Chavez Denied Appeal

Though he did not actually harm his parnter in crime Clowers, Chavez was held legally liable for his death because the shooting happened during the commission of a crime. He was sentenced to life in prison.

The appellate court concluded the trial judge acted within the court’s discretion by precluding the testimony because it would have only misled the jurors.
