BERLIN — (10-29-18) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel who supported legalizing same-sex marriage in 2017, has told leaders of her Christian Democrats (CDU), that she will not seek re-election as party chairwoman at a conference in early December.
Her decision came after a dismal performance by the CDU party in elections in the central German state of Hesse on Sunday that badly dented her authority. German media outlets reported that Merkel told senior party executives on Monday morning that she would not stand again.
Angela Merkel had said earlier that she would put forward her candidacy at a CDU party conference in Hamburg in December but after the showing in the election, she has obviously reconsidered.
Chancellor Angela Merkel will remain as chancellor. But her decision to cede the party leadership is a sign of her dwindling power in the CDU.
