SANTA MARIA, CA — (09-25-24) — A male suspect has been detained following a ‘bomb explosion’ inside the Santa Maria Courthouse on Wednesday, seriously injuring five people and leading to an evacuation and closing of the courthouse complex and nearby city buildings.

According to a post made by Santa Barbara County Sheriff spokesperson Raquel Zick on social media, “A suspect has been detained and is being interviewed, and the scene continues to be active after the explosion “from an intentionally set improvised explosive device,” said Zick.

According to Marian Regional Medical Center’ spokesperson Sandy Doucette, five patients are being treated. “Of these, three are in fair condition, while two are in good condition. We are providing them with the highest level of care and support,”.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which provides courthouse security throughout L.A. County, said in a social media post they are at this moment in a state of “heightened alert and providing extra patrols in and around our courts but are not aware of any credible threats.”
