TBILISI, GA — (09-20-24) — We are sad to report that one of Georgia’s most well-known transgender women, Kesaria Abramidze, was brutally murdered in her home on Wednesday, a day after the country’s parliament passed its anti-LGBT bill.
A 26-year-old male suspect been arrested in the case that has shocked the shocked the nation. According to the interior ministry, the male suspect was known to the victim. Local officials say Kesaria Abramidze, 37, was stabbed to death in her flat in the capital, Tbilisi, on Wednesday.
The interior ministry said they are treating this crime as a “premeditated murder committed with particular cruelty and aggravating circumstances on gender grounds”.
Human Rights groups immediately linked the murder of Kesaria Abramidze to the new anti-LGBT law, arguing the right wing government’s never ending transphobic narratives have produced a fatal hate crime.
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, who opposed the anti-LGBT law, said the “horrendous murder” raised urgent questions about hate crimes and discrimination.
The legislation from Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s government treats its LGBT citizens as subhumans. The bill passed by a vote of 84-0 bans same-sex marriage, gender-affirming surgeries, child adoption by non-heterosexuals and the promotion of same-sex relationships in schools.
The ruling party said the “Protection of Family Values and Minors” bill was designed to protect a majority of Georgians seeking protection from “LGBT propaganda”.
However Human Rights groups as well as local LGBT rights groups in the country rejected the right wing’s narrative by saying that the government had used homophobic and transphobic language and ideas in order to frighten Georgians into supporting their draconian bill.
Local human rights group in Georgia the ‘Social Justice Center’, released the following statement:
“Political homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia have become central to the government’s official discourse and ideology.”
