PETALING JAYA, MY — (05-01-23) — Police seized 22,929 of banned sex toys worth RM1.1 million ($224,190.11-USD) from a warehouse in Penang. The operation by police were targeting online transactions in pleasure products.

Back on March 14, the country’s Home Ministry revealed that during a February 15 operations involving online transactions, had seized a considerable amount of sex toys and sex dolls from the Bukit Mertajam warehouse.

According to spokesperson Nik Yussaimi Yussof of the secretary for the ministry’s regulatory and enforcement division, the items were manufactured abroad and were being traded by a business that had been operational since 2022.

The products were also apparently being sold at prices between RM70 to RM450, with profits reach as high as twice the value of the items seized.

“Our checks showed that these items are brought in from China and sold online here due to overwhelming response. We have not found any retail outlets selling them,” said Yussof.

Consequently, an investigation has been opened based on two laws, including Section 7(1) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 for undesirable publications, as well as Section 292(a) of the Penal Code for selling obscene goods.

Back on March 2, a 29-year-old woman connected with the case was arrested and charged at the local magistrate’s court and was fined RM5,000 (US$1,100).

Yussof issued a warning that action would be taken upon individuals involved in activities or businesses that could “erode the nation’s morals, public peace, security, or interests”, and urged anyone with information on anyone involved in such actions to reach out to the ministry directly.

In Malaysia, the ownership and sales of sex toys may collide with Section 292 of the Penal Code, which states that it is illegal to possess, manufacture, or distribute/sell obscene objects, with perpetrators liable to receive up to three years in jail, a fine, or both.

Yussof explained that the use of such sex toys could very well be attributed to loneliness and long-distance relationships by saying…”The majority of those seeking these sex toys are young people, and there are also those among the aged,” said Yussof.
