JERUSALEM, ISRAEL — (12-30-22) — Likud MK Amir Ohana becomes Israel’s first ever openly Gay Knesset Speaker, following Netanyahu retaking the Prime Minister’s office. Ohana thanked his husband, Alon, for supporting him during his first speech as Knesset Speaker on Thursday.

Following a break early in the afternoon, the Knesset reconvened to make history by voting to approve the first openly Gay Knesset Speaker, Likud MK Amir Ohana.

Ohana, who is not only the first openly gay Likud MK but who was Israel’s first openly gay minister. Ohana thanked not only his husband but his family in his inaugural speech as speaker. During his speech he stressed that the new government “will not harm a single child or a single family,”.

This was an attempt to quiet the protesters who blocked streets in protest of the incoming government. He also wanted to put to rest the public’s fears over the upcoming anti-LGBTQ policies that are destined to be introduced by Netanyahu’s far-right coalition.

The 37th Government of Israel was sworn in on Thursday afternoon by a vote of 63-54. Netanyahu has now become the longest-serving prime minister, after already serving 15 years in office.
