JERUSALEM, ISRAEL — (11-28-22) — Benjamin Netanyahu draws concerns from western allies as he appoints Avi Maoz as deputy minister who will run a “Jewish identity” authority. By doing so, Netanyahu has given far-right parties unprecedented power within Israel’s incoming ruling coalition.

Mr Maoz described LGBTQ people as a threat to the family and has said he wants to cancel gay pride parades throughout the country. In fact in 2019, his party ran a poster campaign with the words “Israel chooses to be normal”.

Maoz heads Noam, a religious-nationalist, anti-Arab and anti-LGBTQ party that promotes a strict interpretation of Jewish religious laws in Israel.

Outgoing Prime Minister Yair Lapid has described Netanyahu’s latest appointment as “full-on crazy”, while Palestinian leaders in the West Bank have warned about the dangers of an impending “right-wing fascist coalition”.
