LAS VEGAS — (08-14-22) — Anti-LGBTQ hate speech surged 400% online following the passage of Florida’s bigoted law known as ‘Don’t Say Gay Bill’. The new law that allows bigotry at all levels in public schools throughout the state.

Right wing extremists began their anti-LGBTQ online hate speech campaign with their political pundit created slogan, ‘GROOMING’, shortly after the passage of the Florida bill.

Since March, the surge by anti-LGBTQ right wing extremists have gone online to imply that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people are “grooming” children with slurs attached as “pedophile”, “predator”, Lambda members and more.

The month following Florida’s conservative packed Senate passed the Parental Rights in Education bill (Don’t Say Gay) on March 8, research conducted by the LGBTQ advocacy group Human Rights Campaign and the nonprofit Center for Countering Digital Hate, say they have calculated a 400% surge in anti-LGBTQ hate speech online since the passage of Florida’s draconian law.

The law, which took effect July 1, bans instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity “in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.”

To evaluate the increase in rhetoric related to “grooming”, the LGBTQ advocacy group Human Rights Campaign and the nonprofit Center for Countering Digital Hate collected a sample of 989,547 tweets that were posted between Jan. 1 and July 27.

Their research showed that the LGBTQ community alongside words including “groomer” and “pedophile, were posted over 6,607 tweets a day on average.
