HIGHLAND PARK, IL — (07-04-22) — Six people are dead and 16 others wounded after a gunman started shooting 10 minutes after the Highland Park Fourth of July parade had begun.
UPDATE: Originally reported as 5 Dead and 16 Wounded has been upgraded to Six Dead and 24 hospitalized! The suspect is described as a White Male, 18-20 years old with long Black hair and small build.
People saw blankets placed over three bloodied bodies. Other people were seen covered in blood while running from the scene. Police told people: “Everybody disperse, please. It is not safe to be here.”
Several witnesses said they heard multiple shots fired. In fact one witness told reporters that he counted more than 20 shots.
The aftermath saw left behind chairs, baby strollers and blankets as people sought cover, not knowing where the shots were coming from. Even as people ran, a klezmer band, seemingly unaware of the gunfire, continued to play.
Police are continuing the manhunt for the shooter and are in total battle gear. The entire area has been locked down.
