WASHINGTON D.C. — (05-09-22) — LGBT advocates and legal experts are warning that the overturning of the 1973 landmark Roe v Wade decision could lead to the conservative packed supreme court to revisit and overturn same-sex marriage. Not only that…advocates are concerned over the for LGBT Americans’ mental and physical health and socioeconomic status.

In fact LGBT advocates say that the overturning of Roe v. Wade is not something that exclusively impacts heterosexual women.

“There’s so much about LGBTQ liberation and reproductive justice that connects us…and connect our movements. You know, the foundation of our movements were built on you know, freedom, you know, sexual freedom,” said Kierra Johnson, executive director of the LGBTQ Task Force.

It is well known that members of the LGBT community including queer women, non-binary people and transgender men, go to reproductive health care facilities for abortion access.

Lambda Legal director Sharon McGowan said…”If the almost 50-year legal precedent is overturned, it would be nothing short of devastating for the LGBT community. The right to access abortion, the right to make important decisions about one’s life and health care including abortion are fundamental to the ability of LGBTQ people and everyone to be able to live their lives…” said McGowan.

To give you an example of this threat, Right-wing conservative political commentator Ben Shapiro said on his podcast show on May 4, 2022, “Obergefell is a bad Supreme Court decision and if we had a Supreme Court worth its salt, they would overturn Obergefell.”

Obergefell v. Hodges, 576 U.S. 644, is the landmark civil rights case in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples by both the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
