CARENCRO, LA — (03-22-21) — Popular 24 hour adult novelty store Crave is looking to expand in the city of Carenco by opening a new location in April. But the owners of the Crave adult novelty store were told by the Carencro City Council that they are not permitted to sell sex toys at the new location.

The odd thing about this is that the owners of adult store Crave, Mike and Joline Menard, have been selling sex toys and adult novelties in he city for more than 20 years.

“It’s a really bizarre set of circumstances, we don’t carry pornography, we have instructional things and lots of things to have fun with,” Mike Menard told local news media outlet Channel 10.

When I reached out to the The City of Carencro for comment on this story, a spokesperson told me that the city council is using a 2002 ordinance which states that the ordinance falls under an obscenity law that includes, “solicitation for viewing or the distribution of adult videos, literature, and sexual toys.”

Co-Owner of Carve Mike Menard says that the 2002 ordinance is outdated…“It’s frustrating. I want to work with them. I wish they would give me a list of what I can and cannot have and I would be open to having that discussion,” said Menard.

Menard said that in the Supreme Court case, Miller v. California, the items they sell aren’t legally obscene by the court of law and says because of this, he’s legally allowed to sell adult toys.

“We’re more than happy to work with Carencro to try and make this smooth, but I do want people to have access to the things we sell because I believe in what we do.” said Menard.
