WASHINGTON D.C. — (02-03-21) — Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg made history today being sworn in as the first openly gay cabinet secretary by Vice President Kamala Harris this morning in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Chasten Buttigieg were in attendance for this historic occasion.
In a masked ceremony, vice president Kamala Harris led now Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg through the oath as he swore to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.
The vice president cheerfully congratulated Secretary Buttigieg and gave him the customary COVID-19 protocol of the elbow-bump.

Secretary Buttigieg’s responsibilities will be to serve as principal adviser to president Biden in all matters relating to federal transportation programs. His office oversees the formulation of national transportation policy and promotes intermodal transportation.
