WASHINGTON D.C. — (01-29-21) — Army officials have announced they are investigating a Texas chaplain after reports that he made disparaging remarks against transgender soldiers in a social media post.

Maj. Andrew Calvert, a chaplain with the 3rd Security Force Assistance Brigade in Fort Hood, wrote on the Army Times’ Facebook page on Monday that “Transgender soldiers were mentally unfit” and “unqualified to serve.”

Sources say that Chaplain Maj. Andrew Calvert made the comments following President Biden signing the executive order repealing former President Trump’s ban on most transgender people serving in the military.

The Army’s Security Force Assistance Command announced on Tuesday that it was investigating Maj. Calvert’s actions.

“We are aware of the recent comments posted to the Army Times Facebook in regard to the ban being removed on transgender service members. This incident is under investigation,” officials said in the statement.

The statement went further by remnding Army personnel of the service’s “Think, Type, Post” social media policy and “always treating people with dignity and respect” policy.

Army Times was the first to report on the investigation into Maj. Calvert’s anti-Transgender Solider comments:

President Biden’s executive order takes the military back to the Obama administration policy that lifted the previous ban on transgender military service in 2016.

However in 2017, Trump came into office and without any warning to his staff, the military brass or even the transgender military personnel, tweeted he would “not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.” tweeted Trump.

Presiden Biden corrected this error when he signed the executive order reversing the ban.

“What I’m doing is enabling all qualified Americans to serve their country in uniform and essentially restoring the situation … where transgender personnel, if qualified in every other way, can serve their government in the United States military,” said President Biden just before signing the order.
