WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND — (10-19-20) — Along with the landslide victory of New Zealand’s prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, four new gay members were elected making the New Zealand parliament the first country in the world to have 11 LGBTQ members of parliament.
The election also swept huge victories for Prime Minister Ardern’s labour party as they secured 64 seats out of 120 for 2021.
The center-left Labour Party accounts for seven of these gay members, including Finance Minister Grant Robertson. It is also rumored that Robertson is being considered for deputy prime minister.
The United Kingdom has now lost their title as they were the top country on the planet to have 45 LGBTQ members out of 650 MPs, representing 7 percent of the U.K.’s lower Parliament.
So excited to welcome Labour’s new MPs today. Such a talented, diverse and energetic group. #LetsKeepMoving pic.twitter.com/XwxwQHEfc4
