WASHINGTON, D.C. — (05-24-19) — The Trump administration Friday, announced the cancellation of an Obama-era policy that prohibited health care providers from discriminating against transgender patients. This is latest attack and rollback of federal protections for transgender Americans.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced today that they are rewriting an Obamacare regulation that barred health care discrimination based on sex. The Obama administration issued a rule asserting that the provisions covered gender identity.

However in 2016, a conservative federal judge blocked those protections after religious groups filed suit to stop the Obama administration from allowing them to discriminate against transgender Americans.

The new anti-Transgender proposed rule says that the Department of Health and Human Services will repeal the Obama-era definition of sex protections in order to make its regulations “more consistent” with other agencies.

Trump Administration Attacks Transgender Healthcare Protections

The proposal, released on a Friday before a holiday weekend, comes two days after the Department of Housing and Urban Development moved to let federally funded homeless centers deny services to transgender people.

“The Trump-Pence administration is sanctioning blatant discrimination in health care by attempting to reverse the landmark health care rights law,” said Fatima Goss Graves, president of the National Women’s Law Center. “We are prepared to protect and defend patients against this dangerous attempt to reverse their rights.” said Graves.

Roger Severino (pictured above), director of HHS’ Civil Rights Office, defended the proposed rule rewriting Obamacare’s nondiscrimination provision, Section 1557 of the 2010 health care law.

“We believe in the inherent human dignity of all people,” said Severino on a call with reporters. “That goal is not changed by this rule.” said Severino.

Who was it again in the Trump administration that said they were going to protect LGBTQ rights? Yeah, president Donald J. Trump. I guess we can chalk this up to another blatant lie he has put forth upon the LGBTQ community.
