BILLINGS, MT — (01-19-19) — On January 14th, 2019, high school students in Billings, Montana can no longer access pro-LGBT websites while anti-LGBT websites are allowed to be accessed.

According to Chief Information and Executive Director of Technology for Billings Public Schools Brandon Newpher, said that by filtering certain content, network security will be improved. Our staff and students will be better protected against websites that are not suitable.

In the mind of Brandon Newpher, pro LGBT websites of GLAAD and the Human Rights Watch are considered unsuitable for viewing by school staff and students. Both sites are blocked under what Newpher calls Alternative Sexual Lifestyles.

The ACLU has condemned Brandon Newpher’s homophobic decision to block pro-LGBT websites as they claim that denying access to such websites violates students’ right to free speech and also violates the Equal Access Act.

Jay Kaplan, the ACLU of Michigan LGBT Project staff attorney, said “By blocking such websites is wrong and illegal because they “provide much-needed support and resources for LGBT youth during a critical time of their lives,” said Kaplan. “Not to mention that by blocking pro-LGBT websites sends the wrong message to LGBT students that their voices do not deserve to be heard.” said Kaplan.

We are sure to see lawsuits filed over this obvious homophobic action by Chief Information and Executive Director of Technology for Billings Public Schools Brandon Newpher.
