LGBT POLITICS — (01-03-19) — History has been made as New York City begins enacting its new law allowing the choice of “X” to the list of gender identity on birth certificates. That’s right, New York City joins the growing list of U.S. cities and states that are offering residents a third gender option on their birth certificates.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) praised the law during the signing ceremony of the bill back in October 2018. “This is furthering the city’s commitment to defending the rights of our LGBTQ community,” said de Blasio.
Mayor de Blasio added…“Transgender and gender non-conforming New Yorkers deserve the right to choose how they identify and to live with respect and dignity. This bold new policy advances the fight for equality and makes our city fairer for all people.”
According to the new law, the Nonbinary category on birth certificates can choose to identify as Nonbinary. Parents as well can now choose the category for newborn children.
One of the things that advocates for the Nonbinary gender option law are elated about is the one that no longer requires residents to provide a doctor’s note or an affidavit from a licensed health care facility to change their gender identity.
New York City will soon be joined by its neighbor New Jersey whose new Nonbinary law goes into effect on Feb. 1.
