The Washington D.C. police department are searching for the attackers in an unprovoked ‘gay bashing’ against two men.  According to police, the ‘hate crime‘ took place on 10th St., N.W., near the popular U Street Corridor known for gay nightlife and entertainment on Sunday April 15.

The two victims identified Zack Link and Michael Creason, were leaving a gay bar when three African-American men in their early 20s began shouting homophobic slurs towards the men.  They then started kicking and beating them right on the street.

Police said that one the attackers in the gay bashing attack beat the victims so badly that one victim’s nose was broken and several teeth shattered from the attack. The other victim suffered from a concussion from the attack. Luckily the entire attack was recorded on surveillance video which was quickly uploaded to Twitter in hopes that someone would recognize and report the attackers.

From the video footage, you can see the attackers assault the men and then run off.  Following the attack several people ran over to the victims to render assistance. Both victims were transported to the hospital for treatment.

Police are eager for any leads in this attack and are looking to charge the suspects with a hate crime. “For this particular case, we have information to suggest that some homophobic slurs were used during the course of the assault,” said Chief Peter Newsham. “If it is a hate crime, we’ll bring that charge once we bring the person into custody.” said Newsham.

Over the past three years, hate crimes aka gay bashing, have seen an alarming increase in the nation’s capital with D.C. police reporting that 66 hate crime attacks occurred in 2015 and 107 in 2016. Police state that they are bracing to see the numbers for 2017 which are still pending for release but according to Chief Newsham, rough estimates report a staggering 163 reported cases of hate crimes so far in 2017.
