London-based actor and musician Joseph Segal, has captured social media headlines after the young talent posted a shocking rejection letter sent to him from a talent agency he approached for representation.
According to the rejection letter posted above, the agency states…“We already have a gay actor on our books and also an actor/musician of the same age. So we feel there would be a clash. I’m unable to consider you at the moment.”
Today I received this email from an #agent I am hurt and frustrated. Are all #gayactors the same? Do we not get cast? Are there not enough roles for us? If you can take the time to #RETWEEET please do and spread awareness! #LGBT #actor #ActorsLife #TimesUp #casting @EquityUK pic.twitter.com/fvMWtEeQkD

Totally! As an agent I have never thought that sexual orientation is something to consider as an actor

Joseph, it is a disgrace that this agent has brought your sexuality in to the equation as a reason not to take you on. I’ve worked with many gay actors and they very often are playing a straight character and vice versa. So your sexuality is irrelevant to your casting eligibility

This is an outrage! One wonders how many heterosexuals this talent agent has sent letters to indicating that they have enough straight talent on their roster!
Following the backlash, the talent agency issued a response to Joseph Segal;
‘We feel ashamed so ashamed we feel unable to defend it’
The agency responded with an apology to Segal. ‘We offer our sincerest of apologies to you and anyone else who may have taken offense,’ states the apology letter. ‘We feel ashamed about it, so ashamed we feel unable to defend it. ‘When choosing clients we look at all aspects the artist brings to the table and at no point should we have commented on your sexuality.’
Segal has received huge support online for the outrageous rejection letter sent to the young performer.
