Democrats Win Governor’s Races, Medicaid Expansion Under Obamacare in Maine

Democrats came back with a vengeance on Tuesday by scoring not only both major gubernatorial victories in New Jersey and Virginia but also scored a major victory in Maine where voters approved Medicaid expansion in their state – rebuking their Governor and Donald Trump.

Not only did democrats when the gubernatorial races but they also captured Virginia’s Lt. Governor’s spot and the state Attorney General’s office as well. Capturing all three major spots in the purple state that has been slowly turning blue over the past 15 years.

In fact, democrats won by nearly ten percentage points which hasn’t been done in the state of Virginia since 1985.

Northam received 53.9 percent of the vote to Gillespie’s 44.9 percent in Virginia, with over 99 percent of precincts reporting, as of 10:30 p.m. EST. Murphy managed to capture 55.3 percent of the vote in New Jersey to Guadagno’s 42.7 percent with over 88 percent of the state’s precinct’s reporting, as of 10:30 p.m. EST.

The Virginia race was a clear referendum on Trump’s presidency and agenda. It also shows the demographic swing towards democrats and independents where you see a stark divide between its suburban northern region and rural Appalachian southwest.

However experts on both sides of the political spectrum have clearly said that the democratic turnout was a representative test case on the country’s response to the two major political parties a year after electing Donald J. Trump as president.
