WASHINGTON D.C. – The Justice Department has sent shock waves through Washington ranks as they announced Wednesday May 17, the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to oversee the federal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election which includes a possibility of collusion between President Trump’s election campaign associates and Russian officials.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller to the position in a letter distributed to the mainstream media.

The hope in appointing Mueller as special counsel into the Russian Investigation aims to quell the wave of criticism that President Donald Trump and his administration have had to deal with since the backlash of the firing of FBI Director James Comey last week and the possibility of memos that could lead to obstruction of justice charges and impeachment for the president.
