With the LGBTQ community nationwide under tremendous stress over president Trump’s constant flair for switching on a dime a promise he has made to constituents and by surrounding himself with religious conservatives who are stead fast on reversing the progress the LGBTQ community has made over the last 8 years, this year’s L.A. Pride Parade is being replaced with an Anti-Trump March or better suited as A “Resist March” in West Hollywood, California this summer.
In fact this year Christopher Street West (CSW), is expected more than double the attendance than the numbers of 2016. With the Gay pride season launching in May, plans have already been put into place for the nationwide resistance march including the taking place on June 11 in Washington, D.C. where millions of LGBTQ Americans are expected to march in the 2017 Washington, D.C Pride Parade.
CSW issued the following statement to WeHoville;
“The annual pride parade has been canceled, ceding to the nationwide LGBT Resist March that is scheduled in many U.S. cities for Sunday, June 11, the day the Los Angeles pride parade would normally occur,” according to WeHoville who states that the statement is in reference to the meeting that took place on Thursday March 9 with leaders such as David Bruinooge of the Brooklyn-based Resist March and the producers of L.A. Pride, Christopher Street West (CSW).
“We are LGBTQ+. We are people of color. We are people of different faiths. We are people of all genders and no gender. We are immigrants. We are dreamers. We are people with disabilities. We are parents. We are allies. And we are beautiful intersections of these. But most of all, we are American. Yet our rights are in jeopardy. Forces are gathering in government that intend to take away our hard-won basic human rights.” said the Resist March’s mission statement.
The amount of people set to embark upon WeHo in June is sure have the optics of a massive crowed considering CSW has lost nearly 70 percent of the area normally booked for L.A. Pride. This of course is due to all of the construction going on in the traditional area for L.A. Pride and there is no way around it.
CSW board president Chris Classen told WeHoville’s James F. Mills… “Consequently, only West Hollywood Park’s great lawn and the auditorium, plus San Vicente Boulevard between Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard, are currently available for this year’s Pride Festival.” said Classen.
But one thing religious conservatives and president Trump and his posse are going to see according to LGBT magazine and online news outlet “The Advocate”, “Organizers are expecting a quarter-million to a half-million participants for the protest march, hoping to follow the success of the Women’s March, which drew 750,000 people in Los Angeles the day after President Trump’s inauguration and millions more in other cities around the world.”
The LGBTQ Resist March of 2017 in West Hollywood will kick off at the Kodak Center at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue followed by a three mile course down to LaBrea Avenue, south to Santa Monica Boulevard and come to an end at San Vincente near the legendary Beverly Center where the main L.A. Pride festival is set for this year.
